RULES AND REGULATION
CAREFULLY READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS BEFORE FILLING THE FORM.

Schools are advised to register their Spellers on time to ensure adequate preparation.

Schools are allowed to register as many Spellers as they can to Stand a Chance of Winning the Competition and Schools are to come with maximum 2 Teachers.

Participants must be within the age of 6-17 years of age.

Participants must arrive at the venue on or before 09:10a.m to check in and receive their Tag number. Failure to do so, the School(s) will be penalized.

 

STANDARD RULES AND REGULATIONS  

PRELIMINARY STAGE – DICTATION ROUND

1. PURPOSE OF THE PRELIMINARY STAGE

The Preliminary Stage is designed to assess participants’ spelling ability, listening skills, vocabulary, concentration and accuracy through a series of dictation rounds.

The results from this stage shall be used to select the required number of participants who will qualify for the next stage of the competition.

2. ELIGIBILITY

Only duly registered participants are eligible to participate.

Participants must compete in their registered category.

Substitution of participants is not permitted after registration unless approved by the organisers.

Participants must comply with all instructions given by the organisers, officials and invigilators.

3. COMPETITION FORMAT

The Preliminary Stage shall consist exclusively of dictation rounds. Words shall be dictated by an authorised pronouncer or competition official. Each participant shall write the word exactly as dictated.

Participants may be required to spell the word on their answer sheet rather than verbally. The competition may consist of multiple dictation rounds, depending on the number of participants.

The organisers shall determine the number of words per round before the competition begins.

4. DICTATION PROCEDURE

For each word:

The pronouncer shall announce the word clearly. The word may be repeated according to the competition’s approved procedure.

Participants shall listen carefully and write the correct spelling. Once the official time for the word has elapsed, participants shall stop writing.

Participants shall not be permitted to communicate with one another during the dictation. Pronunciation shall be clear and consistent for all participants.

The organisers may increase or reduce the number of rounds depending on the number of participants.

5. SCORING

Each correctly spelt word shall receive one mark.

A wrongly spell word shall receive zero marks.

No half marks shall be awarded unless expressly stated before the competition.

Missing a letter in a word shall attract zero marks.

An answer that is illegible or cannot reasonably be determined by the marking team may be considered incorrect.

Capitalisation shall not normally affect the score unless the organisers specifically state otherwise.

Punctuation shall not affect the spelling score unless it forms an essential part of the prescribed answer.

GUIDING RULES AND REGULATIONS (VIRTUALLY)

1. Participants must sit in a quiet, well-lit room with their face and surroundings visible at all times.

2. No books, phones, dictionaries, or additional electronic devices are allowed during the competition. A moderator may request a 360° camera view of the participant’s environment before or during the round.

3. Participants will be called in a pre-determined order (randomized or alphabetical).

4. The pronouncer will say the word clearly. Participants may request the word to be repeated, defined, or used in a sentence (maximum two requests per word).

5. Each participant has 20 seconds to begin spelling after the word is given. Spelling must be continuous, with no restarts once begun.

6. Participants must spell the word aloud, letter by letter, and may also be required to type it in the chat for clarity.

7. A word is considered correctly spelled only if all letters are stated in the correct order without self-correction after finishing.

8. If a participant misspells a word, they are eliminated from that round. The competition continues until one speller remains.

9. The last two participants must spell one word each in turns. To qualify, a participant must spell 2 out of 3 of their word correctly and their opponent must misspell theirs.

10. If a participant disconnects, they will be given a maximum of 2 minutes to rejoin. Repeated disconnections may lead to disqualification.

11. If the participant’s voice or video is unclear, the judge may ask for a repeat. If issues persist, it may be considered a forfeited turn.

12. Participants must maintain respect for moderators, judges, and other contestants. Any disruptive or inappropriate behavior leads to disqualification.

14. Judges’/moderators’ decisions are final and binding.

Please note that any state with fewer than 10 registered schools will be required to PARTICIPATE VIRTUALLY

Schools are to register minimum 10 spellers. There is no maximum limit to the numbers of Spellers that can be registered for the Competition.

Do note that there is no REFUND after payment.

Schools are not allowed to change their centre. Any school that changes their their centre will be disqualified from the competition and will not participate in another centre.

Penalty will be issued to any School that violates the rules and regulations.

  Children not REGISTERED as Spellers or Audiences cannot attend the competition. Any school who brings additional children that is not registered will be disqualified from the competition.

Any child that is registered on the day of the competition will not be refreshed.

 REGISTRATION on the day of the competition is N15,000 per contestant.
